I heard about this eve game from my friend at work - Rave. He bought it and hassled me non-stop about it for a month. I was scared to buy it because I knew I would get hooked (i did).
In that month, he mined and killed npc's and generally regalled me with great stories about the game.
So finally I bit the bullet and bought it. After spending days trying to get my char to look exactly as I wanted her (a hard as nails female), I jumped in and started playing.
Speak about immersion... I was hooked instantly.
When I joined, a friend of mine (some of you know him) - Dew that I knew from IRC, had wanted to quit eve. So he gave me everything he had. It consisted of a Probe and 30,000 isk!!!
Holy shit I was rich. In my first day, I had caught up on Rave with money and ship!
From then on myself and Rave worked hard everyday. We discovered the AFK Bestower mining trick and generally tried our hand at killing NPC's.
Shortly after starting, we found a mysterious rock formation oooOOOOoooo. There were missile throwing NPC's and more importantly - a flotsam can! What could be inside? Some highly prized object? Some new weapon type? Only one way to find out...
We set up our probes for battle and charged the rock formation. We both died almost as soon as we entered.
Then we managed to get there by himself the next time round! Inside the can was a small laser crystal! OMG free goodies!!!! How overjoyed we were.
So our next week was spent charging at the can and trying to avoid the missiles. I made it one time to find it empty... that was pretty much the end of that adventure.
So we worked hard and got ourselves into cruisers. We both were Minmatar so we both went for Stabbers to begin with. Great fun and looked cool as fuck. From then on we went into NPC hunting mode.
Rave managed to lose his by accidently pressing ALT-F3 next to a station, which activated his smartbomb instead of his afterburner. Then he managed to lose another fighting NPC's right next to a stargate with missiles that splashed. Damn those Sentry guns!
After a while we decided that there was only one place to go... 0.0 space.
So off we went, deep into Curse space. Got some offices there and hauled all our shit down. We spent the next month hunting NPC's, making money and modules and generally having a blast.
Then something changed the game for me.
While hunting NPC's out there, two Blackbirds warped in the same belt. They were from a corp called Spacepills. I didn't think much of it at the time but was slightly wary.
They MWD straight towards me, then warp jammed and webbed me. They then proceeded to shut the fuck out of me and finally podded me.
I wasn't happy. Over the next couple of weeks we had a few run in's with these guys, they would attack us and we would run to the hills.
Needless to say this pissed me off and wetted my appetite for PVP. So I had a vision ... I could begin an alliance in Curse.
Yep, that's correct... I almost created the first proper Curse Alliance. Here is the thread here:

However, at some point across the galaxy, Ki'li was also having a vision... that being Reikoku. The very day AFTER I posted about the Curse Alliance, Ki'li posted about creating a Frigate corp.
